Perfect for Picnics – the Green Bottle

CAMBRIDGE WINE MERCHANTS to be the first UK retailer to import wine in new high-tech PET
Hal Wilson, owner and managing director of Cambridge Wine Merchants, says “we are always on the lookout for innovation and also for ways to minimize our impact on the environment and our carbon footprint. That’s why we didn’t hesitate long when we had the opportunity to buy Joseph Mellot’s great Sauvignon Blanc, delivered in special high-tech plastic bottles that have been equipped with UV and oxygen blockers.”

These bottles are made of a specific, blown plastic material which enables the wine to stay fresh for up to 15 months. The problem with old techniques was that wines would oxidise  more quickly  than traditional glass containers .

Thanks to the new technique, consisting in a layer of nylon between two PET layers which prevents oxygen ingress, the risk of oxidation is kept to a minimum. The wine is bottled only on demand to ensure it is very fresh when bottled, and oxygen levels are kept very low throughout the production.

But what are the environmental assets of the new bottle?
First of all, it is much lighter than a glass bottle and weighs only 58g as opposed to a minimum weight of 480g for glass bottles. It is also less likely to break and therefore minimizes security risks. But what’s probably most important is that due to the reduced weight of the bottles, fuel consumption for transport is greatly reduced and carbon emission caused by production and transport can be brought down by 68%! The bottle is, like glass, 100% recyclable.

Well, all this might be very new and interesting – but what about the actual wine?
Joseph Mellot’s Sauvignon Blanc 2009 is a lovely, fresh Sauvignon Blanc that’s best to be drunk in the coming summer.

It shows off a pale golden colour that is clear and brilliant. Its attractive aromatic nose combines floral notes (white flowers) with typical Sauvignon aromas (citrus fruits , gooseberry ). The wine is full and expressive on the palate, with  fresh and crisp   citrusy flavours . Its aromatic “enthusiasm” and its perfect balance of tastes make this a very appealing wine , suitable to drink on its own or with smoked salmon, oysters, salads and light dishes. What more is to say than - perfect for picnics!
